Get to know: Cantine Sampietrana, Settebraccia

Tasting Note

This is a powerful and beguiling blend of Negroamaro and Susumaniello. It immediately entices with an aroma of jams, vanilla, and spices. It has an elegant, warm, soft and round texture with intense fruit verging on slightly sweet and ending with luscious tannins. Made from old bush vines and aged in oak, it’s the perfect red for hearty dishes and slow evenings.

Food pairing ideas:

  • A rich vegan aubergine parmigiana

  • Try it with slow-roasted lamb shoulder and rosemary

  • Brilliant with aged cheeses like Pecorino or mature Cheddar

Kate Says

"This is a big wine from down in the south of Italy made using the lovely sounding grapes Negroamaro and Susumaniello. It's a serious wine with a rich flavour that’s easy to appreciate, which makes it a good choice for a gift."

Producer Info

Cantine Sampietrana has been producing characterful wines in the heart of Salento, southern Puglia, since 1952. The name Settebraccia, meaning ‘seven arms’, refers to an old farming tool used across the region – a nod to their deep roots in the land and traditional winemaking values.

This wine is a blend of old-vine Negroamaro and Malvasia Nera, grown in the sun-drenched clay-limestone soils of Brindisi. These ancient bush-trained vines deliver low yields but incredible concentration of flavour.

The grapes are hand-harvested, then gently crushed and fermented in temperature-controlled stainless steel to retain purity. It’s then aged in a mix of French and American oak for around 6–8 months, adding depth, structure, and those savoury, spiced notes. The result is a robust yet refined southern Italian red, with layers of flavour and a long, satisfying finish.

Sampietrana’s approach is sustainable and rooted in tradition, with minimal chemical intervention in both vineyard and cellar – just honest, expressive wines made with care and respect.
