Forager Red Blend 2022

Get to know: Forager Red 2022

A characterful South African red wine crafted from hand-selected parcels across the Western Cape.

Tasting Note

Forager Red 2022 is a bold yet balanced Rhône-style red blend that brings together juicy fruit and savoury depth. Deep ruby garnet in colour with inviting aromas of ripe cherry, red berries, white pepper, dried herbs and a touch of clove spice. On the palate, this Shiraz and Grenache blend delivers layers of bright red fruit alongside subtle vanilla oak, gentle spice and a hint of leather. Medium- to full-bodied with soft, supple tannins, it finishes with an elegant, perfumed lift and just enough structure to keep things interesting. A versatile Western Cape red wine that offers both immediate appeal and the potential to evolve in bottle.

Top food pairings:

  • Grilled beef or barbecue ribs
  • Pan-roasted duck breast with a rich jus
  • Slow-cooked stews and braised meats
Kate Says

"A blend of Shiraz and Grenache, it's a great, punchy red for the money, very fruity of course but also gamey, toasty notes, there's character and depth and it can last a few days opened if kept cool."

Producer Info

Forager is the brainchild of veteran winemaker Mike Graham, who has spent over 40 harvests honing his craft, particularly in the vineyards of South Africa. His approach is all about sourcing – or ‘foraging’ – the best parcels of fruit from across the Western Cape, including Paarl, Wellington and Malmesbury. This patchwork of vineyard sites, combined with old vines and varied soils, brings complexity and depth to this expressive South African red blend.

How it’s made:

  • Varieties: Shiraz (70%), Grenache (30%)
  • Hand-harvested with strict bunch selection to ensure quality and ripeness
  • Cold maceration before fermentation to enhance colour and flavour extraction
  • Fermented in open-top stainless steel tanks with regular punch-downs
  • Matured for 10–14 months in older French and American oak barrels for subtle spice and texture

Good to know:

  • Region: Western Cape, South Africa
  • Style: Red, still, medium- to full-bodied
  • Closure: Cork
  • Vegan: No
  • ABV: 14.1%
  • Vintage: 2022

Why we love it:

This South African red wine hits that sweet spot between ripe fruit and savoury complexity. With its juicy berry core, warming spice and smooth tannins, it’s a brilliant all-rounder for hearty food or a relaxed evening glass.
