Qta do Vale Meao Vintage Port 2001 (Estate Cellared)

Get to know: Quinta do Vale Meao Vintage Port 2001 (Estate Cellared)

Tasting Note

The very best from this great estate... and mature and ready to drink!

This Vintage Port was kept reserved from what was originally released in 2003, and cellared at the property. It has now been released fully bottled-aged in the Douro, and is quite exquisite. There is very limited quantity, and we have been very lucky to get a small allocation. The nose is dominated by blueberry compote, cassis chocolate and hint of violet among floral notes. In the mid-palate the dark fruit gives way to firm tannins and herbal notes. Very persistent finish. This is delicious now but has the potential for further cellaring.

Due to its age, this Port may have a deposit. We recommend decanting it before serving.

Recorked in October 2022

Kate Says

"If you are looking for something extra special, treat yourself or someone you love to a bottle of this. A truly special port from an incredible place. This is sweet, rich, expressive and incredibly soft and velvety. You'll savour every drop."

Producer Info

A vineyard steeped in history, this immense Estate is a standard bearer for the Douro and Portugal. Their wines have grace, finesse and boldness. The Olazabal family, proud owners and descendants of the founder, Antonia Adelaide Ferreira, are now writing a significant chapter for this iconic estate and the region. Since 1998, Winemaker Xito Olazabal is at pains to understand the vast pallet of grapes and terroirs he has within his estate, a passion reflected in the character of his wines.

Great experience, skill, and attention to detail are all key to getting the best out of the estate-grown grapes. Mono-culture vineyards, planted by soil type - alluvial, granite, and schist - are all fermented and aged separately. The resultant wines are then blended together, with different proportions each year, to best represent the estates overall terroir and each vintage's character.

Quinta do Vale Meão has been producing consistently Single Quinta Ports since 2000. In 2001 they decided to make a second lot with the aim of bottle-aging it in their cellar and bring to the market at full maturity.

This port is a blend of Touriga Franca, Touriga Naçional, Tinta Roriz, Tinta Barroca & Others
