Get to know: Domaine de Courcel Pommard 'Les Vaumuriens' 2017
A serious and terroir-driven Pommard red wine from the steep, stony slopes of the Côte de Beaune.
Tasting Note
Domaine de Courcel Pommard 'Les Vaumuriens' 2017 is a classic Pinot Noir that combines firm structure with concentrated, dark-berry fruit. Deep ruby in colour with aromas of wild cherry, blackberry, cedar and a touch of mocha and tobacco. On the palate it shows ripe red and black fruit framed by firm, muscular tannins and a savoury, earthy thread that’s typical of Pommard. The long finish is peppered with graphite-like minerality and a faint spice - this is a robust, ageworthy Burgundy village wine with real presence.
Top food pairings:
- Roast beef or rib of beef
- Game birds with juniper and redcurrant sauce
- Mature Cheddar or triple-cream cheeses
Kate Says
"Pommard at its best - dark, savoury and utterly compelling. It’s immediately enjoyable, with concentrated berry fruit, smoky spice and that iron-stone grip that keeps you coming back for another sip. A great bottle to open with a roast or to tuck away a few years."
Producer Info
Domaine de Courcel is a long-established, family domaine in Pommard with vineyards concentrated on the southern coteaux of the appellation. The estate works its ten hectares with a focus on low yields, late harvesting and careful vineyard work to express each parcel’s terroir — Les Vaumuriens being a small, stony village site just above the Rugiens. Their Pommards are known for precision, firm tannins and a mineral drive.
How it’s made:
- Varieties: 100% Pinot Noir (Les Vaumuriens parcel).
- Vineyards: Les Vaumuriens is on shallow, white marl soils, north-east facing; vines are around forty years old in many plots.
- Harvest & extraction: Manual harvest with severe sorting, cold maceration and a relatively long vatting (around a month) with frequent punch-downs and controlled, cool fermentation to help extract ripe aromatics and structure.
- Post-fermentation: Long post-fermentation soak to round tannins; élevage in oak with a measured use of new barrels to build texture and complexity.

Why we love it:
This Pommard red wine captures the darker, more sculpted side of Burgundy - concentrated fruit, savoury complexity and a firm mineral backbone. It’s a superb match for hearty roasted meats and will reward short- to medium-term cellaring as the tannins soften and the earthy layers deepen.
