Rook en Spieels, Waas Semillon 2024/25

Get to know: Rook en Spieels, Waas Semillon 2024/25

A friendly, textured South African orange wine made from Semillon.

Tasting Note

The kind of orange wine that quietly wins over white-wine drinkers. There’s texture from the subtle skin tannins, but not too much, and the wine is delightfully drinkable. The nose is fresh - ripe peach and apricot. The palate builds on this with a creamy texture before the bright acidity freshens everything up, ending with a pithy citrus-pith finish. Bright, modern, brilliant for now.

Top food pairings:

  • Fried chicken with a rainbow ‘slaw
  • Roast chicken with lemon and herb stuffing
  • Aubergine, halloumi or other grilled veg with tahini
  • Lightly spiced rice dishes (chicken biryani)
Kate Says

“If you’re looking for an easy way into orange wine, this is a great place to start. It is bright, clean, fruity and fresh while still offering the texture that this style is known for. If you love the Solara Orange wine, this is for you.”

Producer Info

Rook en Spieels Waas Semillon is produced exclusively for Moreno Wines in South Africa. The wine is naturally fermented and macerated on the skins with daily punch-downs to build flavour and texture, then put through a basket press. After fermentation the wine is settled in tank before being transferred to concrete eggs and flexcubes — vessels designed to incorporate oxygen during ageing with more control and consistency than traditional barrels. The result is the cleaner, fresher, more accessible end of the orange-wine spectrum.

How it’s made:

  • 100% Semillon
  • Natural fermentation on skins, daily punch-downs for texture
  • Basket-pressed after fermentation
  • Settled in tank, then aged in concrete eggs and flexcubes (oxygen-aware ageing without barrel character)
  • Bottled to drink young

Good to know:

  • Region: South Africa, Paarl
  • Style: Orange wine (skin-contact), dry
  • Grape: Semillon 100%
  • ABV: 12%
  • Vintage: 2024/25
  • Bottle size: 75cl

Why we love it:

Orange wine often gets accused of being challenging - too tannic, too funky, too “natural-wine bar” for casual drinkers. Waas Semillon is the answer to that. Wild-fermented, basket-pressed, concrete-egg-aged - every winemaking choice a serious producer would make - but the resulting bottle is bright, clean, and friendly enough to win over a Sauvignon-Blanc drinker. The orange wine we hand to anyone who says “I don’t think I like orange wine.”
