Get to know: Mercouri Estate, Foloi Roditis Viognier

Tasting Note

A wine that captures memories of summer. This blend of the local Roditis grape with Viognier is a zesty, aromatic delight. Intense aromas of citrus blossoms, green apple and white peach follow on to a refreshing and fruity palate that finishes with more citrus and a subtle note of the sea.

Try this with grilled octopus or a plate of fish goujons and tzatiki.

Kate Says

"Greece is a great source of interesting and aromatic wines and this white from the Peloponnese is exactly the kind of gem we hope to find. There's the faintest hint of effervescence, zesty lemon and apple fruit and a hint of the sea. I'd love this with a plate of fish goujons."

Producer Info

Mercouri Estate is located in Western Peloponnese, in Korakohori, near Katakolo, Pyrgos and Ancient Olympia. It is an old, large farm, with a history of 140 years in the production of wine, olive oil and formerly Corinthian raisins. Since 1987, with the 3rd and 4th generation of the family, a new, systematic effort to revive the wine-producing activity of the estate with the production of standardized wines begins. As part of this effort, the old facilities of the winery are reconstructed, modernized and expanded and the vineyards are renewed with new plantings. Today Ktima Mercouri S.A. is managed by brothers Vassilis and Christos Kanellakopoulos, 4th generation of the family.

If something characterizes Mercouri Estate in particular, it is its environment. The beautiful green and blue nature that surrounds it, the wealth of flora and the variety of its fauna is overgrown with cypresses, oaks, cedars, hollies, laurels and oleanders, myrtles, schinos, arokarias and many other trees and plants. All vegetation in this area of the Estate is the product of a long-term effort to develop the native flora and supplement it with new species of forest and ornamental plants.

For the production of white wine "Foloi", the grapes come from specific vineyards of cooperating viticulturists, on the plateau of mountainous Ilia, at an altitude of 500-650 m.
