Get to know: Kompassus Bairrada Tinto
Tasting Note
Sourced from the lush vineyards of the Bairrada region in Portugal, this splendid red wine reflects the unique characteristics of the land. With a rich blend of traditional grape varieties, including Baga and Touriga Nacional, it delivers a enticing aroma of ripe berries and cherry, hints of spice, and a touch of floral notes. On the palate, there's a harmonious balance between fruitiness and refreshing acidity with luscious flavors of black cherry, plum, and currant, elegantly complemented by subtle undertones of oak and a gentle earthiness.
This wine truly shines when paired with roast pork belly or artisanal cheeses, an ideal choice for a barbecue.
Kate Says
Colheita simply means harvest or vintage, and this is a pure expression of Bairrada fruit. Baga grapes produce wine with lots of tannin and freshness and it shines here with a little Touriga Nacional to soften and add richness. I'll be enjoying this with a grilled lamb chop.
Producer Info
João Póvoa started producing branded wines in 1991 with Quinta de Baixo, and was the first individual producer of note in the Cantanhede region. Since 2005 the company was renamed Kompassus, and still has a philosophy of wine production based on family roots and traditions. Baga, as the dominant grape variety in the region, made him passionate about what was from the very beginning the basis of all his red and sparkling wines. A large part of the grapes still come from vines that are more than 70 years old.
Fermentation occurs in stainless steel at controlled temperature followed by pre-fermentation skin maceration. The Touriga Nacional portion is aged in 700L used French oak barrels.
