Domaine de Saje, Chateauneuf-du-Pape ROUGE "Marquis Anselme Mathieu" 2023

Get to know: Domaine de Saje Châteauneuf-du-Pape Rouge "Marquis Anselme Mathieu" 2023

A classic Châteauneuf-du-Pape red wine crafted in a traditional style from old-vine parcels across the Southern Rhône.

Tasting Note

Domaine de Saje Châteauneuf-du-Pape Rouge "Marquis Anselme Mathieu" is a beautifully poised Rhône red that combines old-vine concentration with a silky, approachable edge. Light ruby in colour with lifted aromas of ripe raspberry, cherry, stewed black fruits, and a touch of wild herbs and spice typical of Grenache-led blends. On the palate, this Châteauneuf-du-Pape is medium-bodied and elegant, with layers of juicy red berries, subtle spice, and fine, supple tannins. There’s a lovely sense of freshness running through it, leading to a smooth, persistent finish with a savoury twist. A refined yet characterful expression of Southern Rhône winemaking, with both immediate charm and short-term ageing potential.

Top food pairings:

  • Roast lamb with rosemary and garlic
  • Duck breast with a cherry glaze
  • Slow-cooked Provençal vegetable dishes
Kate Says

"This feels like proper, old-school Châteauneuf – elegant, layered, and quietly complex. One to open when you want something a bit special without it shouting about it."

Producer Info

Domaine de Saje is led by Jérôme Mathieu, whose family roots in Châteauneuf-du-Pape stretch back to the 16th century. Farming around 23 acres split across 26 parcels, he works with a patchwork of soils, elevations, and exposures, many planted as traditional field blends including all 13 permitted grape varieties. This diversity allows him to craft authentic, old-school Châteauneuf-du-Pape wines that reflect both heritage and terroir. The vineyards are cultivated without herbicides, and all fruit is hand-harvested to preserve quality and character.

How it’s made:

  • Varieties: 85% Grenache with a field blend of 12 other authorised Châteauneuf-du-Pape varieties
  • Hand-harvested from three centenarian parcels planted between 1890 and 1906
  • Grown on a mix of limestone-clay, galets roulés over sandy red clay, and classic Rhône clay soils
  • Traditional vinification in the family’s cellar to preserve terroir expression
  • Aged in one of Jérôme’s oldest oak foudres for 14–16 months

Good to know:

  • Region: Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Southern Rhône, France
  • Style: Red, still, medium-bodied
  • Closure: Cork
  • Vegan: No
  • ABV: 15.5%
  • Vintage: 2023

Why we love it:

This Châteauneuf-du-Pape red wine captures the essence of traditional Southern Rhône winemaking, blending old-vine Grenache with a full field blend for depth and complexity. With its silky texture, layered fruit, and subtle savoury edge, it’s a brilliant example of how elegance and heritage come together in one bottle.
