Get to know: Languedoc-Roussillon

Languedoc-Roussillon, located in the south of France, is one of the largest and most diverse wine-producing regions in the world. Known for its sun-soaked vineyards and Mediterranean climate, this region produces a wide range of wines, from rich reds to refreshing whites and vibrant rosés. The area is home to a number of innovative winemakers who are pushing the boundaries of French wine production while still honouring the region’s long history.

Key Regions in Languedoc-Roussillon Wine

Corbières
Corbières is one of the largest appellations in the Languedoc, producing wines that are known for their bold flavours and rustic charm. The reds here are typically made from blends of Grenache, Syrah, and Carignan, offering dark fruit flavours, earthy undertones, and a touch of spice. These wines are perfect for pairing with hearty dishes like grilled meats and stews.

Minervois
The Minervois appellation, located just to the north of Corbières, is known for producing wines with a balance of richness and elegance. Minervois reds are typically made from Syrah, Grenache, and Carignan, resulting in wines with deep fruit flavours, velvety tannins, and a hint of herbs. Minervois wines are ideal for pairing with Mediterranean cuisine, from roast lamb to ratatouille.

Fitou
Fitou is one of the oldest AOCs in the Languedoc-Roussillon, and it’s known for producing full-bodied, robust reds. These wines are primarily made from Carignan, Grenache, and Syrah, offering flavours of dark berries, licorice, and herbs. Fitou wines pair well with grilled meats, charcuterie, and rich casseroles.

Côtes du Roussillon
Located in the Roussillon region near the Spanish border, Côtes du Roussillon produces wines that are influenced by the Mediterranean climate and the rugged terrain. The reds here, often made from Grenache, Syrah, and Mourvèdre, are full-bodied and fruity with a touch of spice. These wines are perfect for pairing with grilled meats, sausages, or even spicy tapas.

Picpoul de Pinet
In contrast to the bold reds, Picpoul de Pinet is one of the most renowned white wines from the Languedoc. Made from the Picpoul grape, this wine is known for its crisp acidity, citrusy flavours, and refreshing minerality. Picpoul de Pinet is perfect for pairing with seafood, particularly oysters and shellfish, making it a favourite for summer dining.

Key Grape Varieties:

Grenache
Grenache is one of the most widely planted grape varieties in the Languedoc-Roussillon region. It produces wines with ripe, red fruit flavours, soft tannins, and a hint of spice. In the blends of Corbières, Minervois, and Côtes du Roussillon, Grenache adds fruitiness and smoothness to the wines.

Syrah
Syrah is another key variety in the Languedoc, contributing bold fruit flavours, black pepper spice, and structured tannins to the region’s reds. Syrah is a dominant player in many of the region’s AOCs, including Minervois and Côtes du Roussillon, where it adds depth and complexity to the wines.

Carignan
Carignan is a traditional grape of the Languedoc-Roussillon region, often used in blends to add body and structure. It produces wines with intense fruit flavours, earthy notes, and sometimes a hint of smokiness. In Fitou and Corbières, Carignan adds a rustic, robust quality to the reds.

Mourvèdre
Mourvèdre is typically used in blends, particularly in the southern part of the Languedoc and Roussillon, where it contributes dark fruit flavours, a touch of spice, and firm tannins. It’s often paired with Grenache and Syrah in wines like Côtes du Roussillon for added complexity and depth.

Picpoul
The Picpoul grape is used exclusively to make Picpoul de Pinet, one of the region’s most celebrated white wines. It produces wines with a bright, zesty acidity and flavours of citrus, green apple, and a touch of minerality. Picpoul de Pinet is perfect for those who enjoy crisp, refreshing whites.
