Get to know: Solara Orange wine

Tasting Note

If you’re orange wine-curious, this is the one to try first. Solara Orange Wine is fresh and vibrant stuff – bright, zesty and textured, with layers of apricot, orange peel, quince and poire william (that’s pear brandy to you and me), plus a soft lick of vanilla. It’s got the zip of a white wine, but with more grip and character – a bit like if a white wine had a fling with a red.

Pairs well with:

Hard cheeses (like Manchego or a mature Cheddar), slow-cooked pork or roast chicken, and works a treat with spiced vegan dishes – think roasted squash, lentils, or a Moroccan-style tagine.

In the press

"Orange wine’s tannins can shock the unprepared: “What’s this red-wine-like texture doing in a wine that looks like an old white?” This well made, well priced example has a little of that but not too much grip and it’s combined with creamy apricot and subtle bitterness. A great starter example for the style."

David Williams - The Guardian, March 2024

Kate Says

"Solara orange wine is by far our most popular and most accessible orange wine and has helped introduced the style to so many people. It is less tannic than some other skin-contact whites, which allows the fruit to shine."

Producer Info

The Cramele Recas Estate, owned by Englishman, Philip Cox and his Romanian wife Elvira, have put in a huge amount of work into transforming their slice of grape growing history into a contemporary winemaking haven.

Their winemaking team – including Aussie Hartley Smithers and Spaniard Nora Iriarte – bring together international know-how with local grapes and age-old methods. With over 700 hectares under vine and a serious focus on sustainability and innovation, this is a place where tradition meets proper modern winemaking.

Solara orange wine is made by leaving the grape skins and seeds in contact with the pressed juice, creating a deep orange-hued finish. The wine ferments naturally without the addition of yeasts, sulphur or any other additions. The different varieties are then blended and before a natural cold stabilisation, and bottled unfiltered and unfined.
