Chateau Desmirail, Margaux 2014

Get to know: Chateau Desmirail Margaux 2014

Tasting Note

A refined expression of Margaux, the Château Desmirail 2014 offers a lovely balance of finesse and freshness. The nose is all black cherries, violet, and subtle cedar, with a touch of tobacco leaf. On the palate, it’s medium-bodied with silky tannins, bright acidity, and flavours of redcurrant, blackberry, pencil shavings, and a delicate earthy finish. There’s a real sense of grace here – not a blockbuster, but a wine of quiet confidence.

Top food pairings:

  • Roast duck with a cherry glaze
  • Vegan lentil and beetroot bourguignon
  • Soft, earthy cheeses like Brie de Meaux or Saint-Marcellin

When to drink it: Drinking beautifully now, but will continue to evolve gracefully for another 5+ years.

Kate says

“If you’re after that old-school Margaux charm without paying silly money, this is a brilliant shout. It’s elegant, understated and just feels grown-up. Fresh, vibrant, drinking very well yet plenty of life in it. I love it with roast poultry or even mushroom risotto – it doesn’t overpower, just adds polish.”

Producer Info

Château Desmirail is a Third Growth (Troisième Cru Classé) in the historic 1855 Bordeaux Classification. Its roots date back to the late 17th century, when Jean Desmirail lent his name to the estate. Today, it's under the care of Denis Lurton, whose family has a long, respected legacy in Bordeaux winemaking.

Situated in the heart of the Margaux appellation, Desmirail’s vineyards sit on classic Médoc gravel soils, ideal for growing Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Petit Verdot. The focus here is on elegance over power – a true Margaux hallmark.

Winemaking method:

  • Hand-harvested grapes sorted for quality
  • Fermented in stainless steel and concrete vats for temperature control
  • Aged in French oak barrels (30–40% new) for 12–14 months
  • Blended and bottled after gentle fining

The cooler, more structured 2014 vintage brought freshness and definition – Desmirail used this to craft a wine with fine tannins and lifted aromatics, ideal for lovers of classic Bordeaux style.
