Get to know: Soalheiro Alvarinho

Tasting Note

Nicknamed ‘Clássico’, Soalheiro Alvarinho was the first wine ever to be made by the family. Since then, it remains their most classic style of single varietal Alvarinho, with aromatic freshness, intense tropical fruit, ripe peaches and apricots with lots of citrus fruit balanced with great acidity and clean minerality on the finish. Its zesty acidity gives it and the chance for evolution in the bottle, though unless you're building a cellar, it's hard to resist it while it is fresh.

A perfect partner to steam mussles and grilled seafood dishes or just as an aperitif in the sunshine.

Kate Says

"It's no secret that I'm a huge fan of Albarino. Soalheiro make such a pure and precise wine with this grape. It is vivid and very intense with lipsmacking acidity. I'd enjoy this with grilled mackerel with lemon and olives."

Producer Info

The Soalheiro Vineyards were established in 1974 overlooking the river Minho and since then this very special terroir has allowed Soalheiro to forge it's reputation as the finest producer of Alvarinho in the country. Their flagship wine is often quoted as the standard bearer for this variety in Portugal.

Monção and Melgaço, the most northern region of Portugal, is protected by mountains that form a unique microclimate. This allows a perfect marriage between rainfall, temperature, and the number of hours of sunshine needed for the best maturation of Alvarinho grapes. The microclimate in Monção and Melgaço is especially important during ripening, when hot days alternate with cold nights, enabling the development of fresh and fruity aromas and an acidity that is present, but moderate - ideal conditions for their Soalheiro Alvarinho.

The grapes are harvested by hand. Between pressing and fermentation, the must is clarified at a low temperature. The wine ferments in stainless steel and matures on fine lees before bottling. The objective of vinification is to obtain a wine that showcases the grapes' high quality, resulting in good evolution in the bottle.
