Cantine Sampietrana, Carlone Primitivo di Manduria 2022

Get to know: Cantine Sampietrana, Carlone Primitivo di Manduria

Rich, sun‑ripened Primitivo from the heart of Manduria

Tasting Note

Sampietrana's Carlone Primitivo di Manduria is full of ripe black cherry, black plum and a touch of bramble jam, layered with hints of spice and sweet tobacco. On the palate it’s soft and generous - think dark berry fruit, a whisper of dried fig and a gentle savoury edge. The tannins are smooth and the finish lingers with warm spice and depth.

Top food pairings:

  • Slow‑braised lamb ragu or pork roast with fennel
  • Aubergine parmigiana or mushroom and olive stew (vegan adaptable)
  • Cheese: aged Pecorino Toscano or mature Piacentinu
Kate Says

"Primitivo is the Italian name for Zinfandel. This one is a treat if you like a big red wine. There’s lots going on here. Dark, brooding, savoury, plummy, fig and vanilla spice. Rich and full bodied. Great with roast red meat."

Producer Info

Cantine Sampietrana is a cooperative in Manduria, Puglia, known for producing robust, traditional styles of Primitivo. The vines grow in the region’s well‑drained, limestone and clay soils, under hot sun and cooling sea breezes — perfect for crafting wines with both weight and freshness.

Carlone Primitivo di Manduria 2022 is made entirely from Primitivo grapes harvested at peak ripeness. Fermented in stainless steel with controlled maceration for colour and softness, it sees no new oak — just stainless-steel ageing to maintain purity and ripeness.

How it’s made:

  • 100% Primitivo grown in Manduria’s limestone‑clay soils
  • Hand‑harvested in late summer for optimal ripeness
  • Fermented in stainless steel with extended maceration
  • No oak — aged on fine lees for smoothness and vibrancy
