Casa de Vilacetinho, Grande Escolha Vinho Verde 2023

Get to know: Casa de Vilacetinho, Grande Escolha Vinho Verde

A top-tier Vinho Verde from one of the oldest estates in the region.

Tasting Note

A proper step up in Vinho Verde: pale straw with glints of green, this Grande Escolha has bright citrus and orchard fruit on the nose, think ripe peach, plum and a hint of lemongrass. On the palate it’s mineral‑driven and elegant, with stone fruit, tropical hints and a zippy freshness. The lees ageing gives it a lovely complexity for the price.

  • Classic match: oysters, seabass ceviche, or trout fillets
  • Also great with: goat’s cheese, tempura vegetables, mild Thai curries
  • When to drink: long lunches, light restaurant meals, or anytime Sauvignon seems too loud
Kate Says

"I love the wines from here, it’s a gorgeous place to go in Northern Portugal where it’s cooler so you get bright acidity and lower alcohol. It’s got a little spritz and has really refreshing citrussy notes but also tropical characters."

Producer Info

Casa de Vilacetinho is one of the historic names in Vinho Verde. Founded in 1790, the estate is nestled on the south-facing banks of the River Douro near the town of Alpendurada. Its old vines and prime terroir – granite soils and cool Atlantic influence – give the wines exceptional freshness and character.

The Grande Escolha is made primarily from the Avesso grape, with a small portion of Arinto. The grapes are hand-harvested and vinified with precision to preserve aromatics and acidity. There's no oak – just stainless steel fermentation and a short period on fine lees to build texture and finesse. It's Vinho Verde made with care and built to impress.

How it’s made:

  • Mostly Avesso, with a touch of Arinto
  • Hand-picked grapes from estate vineyards
  • Fermented in stainless steel to retain freshness
  • Aged briefly on fine lees for added complexity

Good to know:

  • Region: Vinho Verde DOC, Portugal
  • Vintage: 2023
  • Grapes: Avesso, Arinto
  • ABV: 12.5%

Why we love it:

This is grown-up Vinho Verde – bright and breezy, but with texture and structure too. A perfect match for seafood, salads and sunshine, or simply a midweek glass that hits the spot every time.
