Alceno, Sierra de Enmedio Monastrell 2023

Get to know: Alceno, Sierra de Enmedio Monastrell

Tasting Note

This Alceño Sierra de Enmedio Monastrell is a proper crowd-pleaser from Jumilla in southeast Spain—known for its sun-drenched vineyards and powerful reds. Deep ruby in the glass, it’s packed with juicy blackberry, plum, and a whiff of black pepper spice. The palate is smooth and medium-bodied, with soft tannins and a touch of liquorice on the finish.

Food Pairings:

  • Great with grilled aubergine burgers
  • Pairs well with slow-cooked lamb or smoky BBQ ribs
  • Loves hard cheeses like aged manchego or a mature cheddar

Best served slightly below room temperature - this one's made for easy, everyday drinking without compromising on flavour.

In the Press

"Appealingly soft, juicy Spanish red. Easy to drink on its own, better with tapas." - Fiona Beckett, The Guardian October 2023

Kate Says

"Monastrell is the Spanish name for the Mourvèdre grape and it thrives in hot regions like Jumilla. This example from family owned winery Alceno is ripe, fruity & delicious. I'd enjoy this with a few plates of meaty tapas."

Producer Info

Bodegas Alceño is a family-run winery based in Jumilla, in southeast Spain. They’ve been producing wine here since 1870, making them one of the region’s most experienced names. The area’s hot days and cool nights are perfect for Monastrell, a grape that thrives in tough, dry conditions.

For the Sierra de Enmedio Monastrell, grapes are harvested from older vines that grow in limestone-rich soils. The wine is made using traditional fermentation methods at controlled temperatures, helping to preserve the bright fruit and soften the tannins. There's no oak ageing here - just clean, honest Monastrell that shows off its natural vibrancy.

The result is a Monastrell wine from Jumilla that’s all about ripe fruit, subtle spice, and effortless drinkability - ideal for fans of bold reds that don’t break the bank.
