Get to know: Villa Oeiras Carcavelos 7 Year Old (37.5cl)
A beautifully balanced Portuguese fortified wine from the historic Carcavelos DOC in the Lisboa region.
Tasting Note
Villa Oeiras Carcavelos 7 Year Old is a richly aromatic, gently sweet fortified wine with a lovely sense of balance and place. Deep golden in colour, it opens with aromas of sweet orange peel, dried apricot, honeysuckle and a touch of almond. On the palate, this Carcavelos blend of Arinto, Galego Dourado and Ratinho offers a velvety texture layered with caramel, biscuit, hazelnut and marzipan notes. The finish is elegant, pure and long, with a lift of freshness that keeps everything in harmony. A deliciously moreish example of traditional Carcavelos port-style wine.
Top food pairings:
- Pastéis de nata or almond tart
- Blue cheese such as Stilton or Roquefort
- Dark chocolate desserts
Kate Says
"If you love the richness of tawny port but want something a bit more citrusy and refreshing, this is a gem. Sweet, nutty and beautifully smooth – it’s a dreamy after-dinner sipper."
Producer Info
Villa Oeiras is one of Portugal’s most historic and unique wine estates, set just 10km west of Lisbon in the heart of the Carcavelos DOC. Originally the estate of the Marquis de Pombal, it was revived in 2001 by the Oeiras Municipality with the goal of preserving and restoring this near-forgotten style of Portuguese fortified wine. Cooling Atlantic breezes, limestone-rich soils and meticulous, small-scale winemaking all contribute to the estate’s refined and expressive style.
How it’s made:
- Varieties: Arinto, Galego Dourado & Ratinho
- Manual harvest to ensure optimum ripeness and freshness
- Fermentation halted mid-way by adding brandy from the Lourinhã region (77%)
- Aged in Portuguese and French oak casks for an average of 7 years
- Develops natural notes of nuts, honey, spice and caramel through long ageing
