Get to know: New Wave Malbec Discovery Trio

Description

If you like full-flavoured red wine, this is a trio for you.

Here we have three wines that showcase the wonderful, characterful dimensions of a grape we feel very familiar with. These are Malbecs that will energize a jaded palate and demonstrate what an exciting grape it can be. The focus is on wines that use demonstrate how altitude and regionality can effect the wine and features examples from Mendoza and Patagonia. The other key to these wines is that they rely less on big oaky flavours which allows the fruit to shine.

Whether you're just discovering Malbec, or you love it and want to try more, there's lots to enjoy here.

Kate Says

"Three very different styles, all drinking beautifully. The Recoleta is aromatic and fruity, a perfect introduction. The Ataliva is fuller like you'd expect but with a focus on pure, expressive fruit and only subtle oak that adds texture and a little spice. The Aniello displays the variety in regionality with a darker, more savoury and herbaceous example with a fresh finish that I personally love."

What's inside?

Mauricio Lorca, Recoleta Malbec, 14% Mendoza

Mauricio Lorca is a champion of fruit driven wines that have a wonderfully expressive quality. Dark and aromatic with raspberry, plum and cherry fruit, a little pepper spice and a fresh and juicy finish with light tannins. An unoaked wine and all the better for it for it. A real crowd-pleaser.

The freshness and vibrancy of the fruit is down the the altitude of the vineyards. Sourcing fruit from their own Vista Flores vineyards 1050 meters above sea level.

Enjoy this with a lamb kebab.

Benegas, Ataliva Malbec, 13.5% Mendoza

This delicious Malbec is the result of fruit grown by a group of independent growers in the Uco Valley with whom Benegas have worked for many years, the only wine made at the winery not 100% estate grown. Vigorous purple in colour, lots of intense plum and cherry aromas with a floral hint typical of the Uco, soft and juicy on the palate. A simple, fresh, highly approachable and great value Malbec from a brilliant producer.

Benegas is one of the great true stories of the wine world, a slice of living history no less, and with Gisella Garrido and Maria Alvarez in the winemaker’s team at the helm day-to-day, the future looks very bright indeed.

This is a great wine to try with pasta in a meaty sauce.

Aniello 006 Malbec, 14.2% Patagonia

A wonderful Malbec from Patagonia that has a wonderful freshness and personality. It looks and smells very much as you would expect of the Argentine classic – very dark in colour and fairly brooding in aroma, yet with a lifted aromatic quality reminiscent of dried flowers like lavender and herbs and, most importantly, gorgeous acidity on the palate that displays a touch of elegance. There's black cherry, blueberry and blackcurrant fruit but also hints of red cherry, strawberry and earthy minerality. It leads to a finish that is alive with that gentle pepper, cinnamon, and liquorice complexity.

Patagonia as winemaking region is very different from Mendoza; it is so very green with a huge river running right through the vineyards, and low altitude. Aniello is a relatively small venture from Rio Negro encompassing old pre-phylloxera Malbec vines and a winery originally established in 1927.

Try this with roast beef or paprika chicken.
