El Escoces Volante, Manga del Brujo Blanco 2023

Get to know: El Escocés Volante Manga del Brujo Blanco 2024

A beautifully expressive Spanish white wine from the dramatic high-altitude vineyards of Calatayud in Aragón.

Tasting Note

Manga del Brujo Blanco is an aromatic, mountain-grown blend with loads of ripe fruit and a vibrant saline edge. Pale gold in colour, it opens with lifted aromas of peach, apricot, candied citrus peel, and wild mountain flowers – classic traits of Macabeo and Garnacha Blanca. On the palate, it’s medium-bodied with generous flavours of white peach, quince, and subtle, seamlessly integrated oak. The finish is long, mineral, and gently saline, giving the wine real poise and freshness. A distinctive, high-altitude style that showcases the purity and character of Calatayud’s rugged landscape.

Top food pairings:

  • Roast chicken with herbs and charred lemon
  • Seafood paella or garlic prawns
  • Grilled vegetables with manchego
Kate Says

"Norrel Robertson has this brilliant way of turning tough, mountain vineyards into something genuinely special. His Calatayud project is all about purity and honesty in the glass, and Manga del Brujo Blanco shows exactly why he’s so highly regarded."

Producer Info

El Escocés Volante, led by Master of Wine Norrel Robertson, is known for crafting expressive, site-driven wines from the rugged hillsides of Calatayud. Working with old vines planted between 650 and 1000 metres above sea level, the team embraces organic viticulture, dry-grown vineyards, and a philosophy rooted in sustainability and terroir expression. Their high-altitude parcels of Macabeo and Garnacha Blanca consistently deliver wines with freshness, texture, and unmistakable regional character.

How it’s made:

  • Varieties: 50% Macabeo, 50% Garnacha Blanca
  • Hand-harvested between mid-September and early October to preserve balance and natural acidity
  • Whole-bunch pressing following Burgundian methods, using a long, slow press cycle with no sulphur or enzymes
  • Spontaneous fermentation in used 500L Stockinger and François Frère barrels at ambient temperatures (18–20°C)
  • A month on full fermentation lees before racking back into barrels for added texture and depth

Good to know:

  • Region: Calatayud, Aragón, Spain
  • Style: White, still
  • Closure: Cork
  • Vegan: Yes
  • ABV: 12.9%
  • Vintage: 2024

Why we love it:

This expressive Spanish white wine perfectly balances ripe stone fruit richness with mountain freshness and a long, mineral finish. A brilliant example of high-altitude Macabeo and Garnacha Blanca – textured, aromatic, and superb value.
