Can' Leandro, La Vella 2024

Get to know: Can' Leandro La Vella

A fresh, textured white from high-altitude vines in inland Valencia. Zesty, flinty and full of character – proof that Spain’s native whites are having a moment.

Tasting Note

La Vella is a beautifully made white wine from mainly Merseguera, blended with a splash of Malvasía and Tortosí. It opens with aromas of lemon peel, white peach and spring flowers. On the palate, it balances juicy stone fruit with a savoury, saline edge and flinty minerality. Medium-bodied, with a nice bit of grip and a vibrant freshness that defies Merseguera’s reputation for low acidity.

The result is a proper modern Spanish white – textured, clean and full of personality.

Top food pairings:

  • Clóchinas (local Valencian mussels) or other simply steamed shellfish
  • Courgette and lemon risotto (vegan)
  • Cheese: fresh goat’s cheese or Valencian Tronchón

Serve chilled but not too cold – it’s got enough weight and complexity to shine with food.

Kate Says

“This is a brilliant example of the new wave of Spanish whites – native grapes, low intervention, high-altitude freshness and loads of personality. A wine with energy and elegance, from one of Valencia’s most exciting young producers. A fantastic alternative to Albariño or Godello – and brilliant value for the quality.”

Producer Info

Can’ Leandro is the project of brothers Gabriel and Alberto Sanchis Mestre, who took their family’s bulk wine business in a new direction in 2013, focusing on bottling wines from their own traditional vineyards. Based near Ontinyent in inland Valencia, they specialise in native grapes like Merseguera, Bonicaire and Monastrell, making wines with a fresh, modern profile and minimal intervention.

The fruit for La Vella comes from a single 3.5-hectare plot on the Venta Vella estate, 620m above sea level, where bush vines grow on pale, chalky limestone soils (albariza).

How it’s made:

  • 80% Merseguera, 10% Malvasía, 10% Tortosí from a high-altitude limestone vineyard
  • Grapes hand-harvested into 18kg crates and stored cold for 24–36 hours
  • Brief skin contact: cold maceration at 8ºC for 3 hours before fermentation
  • Fermented slowly in stainless steel (14–16ºC) over 33 days
  • Left on fine lees for extra texture and bottled the following March
