La Dourbie, Mala Coste Rouge 2021

Get to know: Domaine de la Dourbie, Mala Coste Rouge

The signature cuvée from a 350-metre plot in the Hérault. - an organic Syrah and Grenache red wine.

Tasting Note

This big and aromatic red opens on floral notes hibiscus and red peony, then wild strawberry and morello cherry fruit underneath. Garnet with ruby at the rim, the palate is concentrated and the tannins are fine and well-knit, and running through all of it is a freshness that lifts the whole wine, with rosemary and thyme drifting across the finish from the scrub the vines grow in. It has lovely intensity without heaviness. A wine to sit with as it reveals itself.

Top food pairings:

  • Wild mushroom and pearl barley stew
  • A slow-cooked beef daube
  • Hard mountain cheeses
Kate Says

"Mala Coste is the name of place - the rough slope the fruit is grown on up at 350 metres in the middle of the scrubland, in a valley with its own microclimate. That combination of warm sun exposure and cooling altitude is why a red this concentrated still tastes aromatic and fresh. It's a big and very drinkable wine."

Producer Info

Domaine de la Dourbie was created in 1781 and modernised by the Serin family after they bought it in 2003. Organic since 2009. Their twelve hectares up in the Rouveyrolles valley at Vendémian sit between 300 and 350 metres, ringed by garrigue, and this is the wine that comes off them. Bernard Serin and his son Nicolas run the estate; the brand was rebuilt over three years following the death of Emmanuel Serin, who drove both the modernisation and the organic conversion.

How it's made:

  • Manual harvest, sorted plot by plot
  • A blend of three plots in the heart of the garrigue, at 350 metres with north-west exposure
  • Certified Organic
  • Five to seven years of ageing potential; serve at around 15°C

Good to know:

  • Region: Hérault, Languedoc, France
  • Grape: Syrah 45%, Grenache 45%, Mourvèdre 10%
  • Style: Red, still, full-bodied
  • Closure: Cork
  • Vegan: Not supplied
  • ABV: 13.5%
  • Vintage: 2018

Why we love it:

Altitude is what makes this Languedoc red wine work - concentration and lift in the same mouthful, at a lower alcohol level than most wines this intense. The estate's signature bottle, and the one to open with a long Sunday lunch.
