Casa Relvas, Ciconia Tinto 2023

Get to know: Casa Relvas, Ciconia Tinto

Tasting Note

Ciconia Tinto is a vibrant, fruit-forward Portuguese red wine that offers loads of flavour without being heavy or overbearing. Made in the warm, sunny Alentejo region, it blends native grapes like Touriga Nacional, Aragonês (aka Tempranillo), and Syrah to create a soft, generous wine with juicy blackberries, ripe plums, and a gentle touch of spice.

There’s a silky texture here, with smooth tannins and a clean, dry finish. No oak overload – just honest, well-made red with loads of charm.

Top food pairings:

  • Charred aubergine and lentil chilli
  • Sausages and mash with caramelised onion gravy
  • Mild blue cheeses or aged cheddar

It’s a brilliant weeknight bottle, perfect for casual dinners and easy-going get-togethers.

Kate Says

"This is one of the wines we love to show to customers who are just beginning to explore Portuguese wine. It is such a satisfying blend that delivers a red bursting with flavour. One to try with tasty chilli."

Producer Info

Ciconia is named after the storks ("ciconia" in Latin) that make their nests across the Alentejo landscape – a region known for its rolling plains, olive groves, and sun-drenched vineyards. This wine is made by Casa Relvas, a family-run winery focused on sustainable farming and local grape varieties.

How it’s made:

  • Grapes are grown in the clay-limestone soils of Redondo, a sub-region of Alentejo
  • Hand-harvested and gently fermented at controlled temperatures to preserve fruitiness
  • Aged in stainless steel and a touch of used French oak for roundness
  • Vegan-friendly, with minimal intervention

The result? A wine that’s all about fruit purity, softness, and approachability, with just enough structure to keep it interesting.
