Producer Profile - Angus Paul

Angus Paul – A Rising Star of Stellenbosch Wine

There’s a new wave of South African winemakers shaking up expectations – and Angus Paul is right at the heart of it. Young, thoughtful, and unafraid to challenge convention, Angus represents a fresh take on South African wine, crafting bottles that feel as exciting as they are drinkable.

Based in Stellenbosch, Angus Paul is part of a new generation redefining what the region can be. Forget the old clichés – this is Stellenbosch, but not as you know it. His wines lean into precision, drinkability, and site expression, offering a more contemporary, characterful style.

From Curiosity to Craft

Angus Paul didn’t set out with a grand plan to become a winemaker – in his own words, he “ended up here through the result of poor decision making”, moving from Scotland to South Africa for study and staying put. At the time, he barely even drank wine. What followed wasn’t a sudden calling, but something more interesting: he found a craft that held his attention and committed to it fully.

That mindset still defines his approach today. Rather than chasing trends or leaning on textbook definitions of “minimal intervention” or “natural”, Angus is more candid about the reality – every wine is shaped by the decisions of the person making it. From picking dates and ripeness levels to how and when wines are pressed, racked, or rested, those small calls add up. The result is something both true to place and unmistakably his.

His work is rooted in the vineyards of the Western Cape, often on granite-rich soils, and focused on varieties that are intrinsic to South Africa’s wine identity – Chenin Blanc, Pinotage, Cinsault. Not because they’re fashionable, but because, as he sees it, they’re part of the ground he stands on. The goal isn’t to imitate another region, but to help carve out a distinctly South African voice in wine.

Why Angus Paul’s Wines Are Worth Your Attention

  • Chenin Blanc with intent: Sourced from Stellenbosch sites, showing ripe pear, citrus and a subtle savoury edge rather than overt richness
  • Hands-off where it counts: No irrigation, no acidification, and minimal additions – decisions made in the vineyard and cellar shape the final wine
  • Detail-driven winemaking: Small choices around picking dates, pressing and élevage build complexity and texture
  • Rooted in South Africa: A focus on Chenin Blanc, Pinotage and Cinsault as part of a broader push to define a modern South African wine identity

Featured Wine: Flight of Furious Fancies Chenin Blanc

If you want a proper introduction to Angus Paul’s style, start here: Flight of Furious Fancies Chenin Blanc 2024 (£29).

This is Chenin Blanc with real character – expect ripe pear, yellow apple and a touch of citrus peel, layered with a gentle honeyed note and a subtle savoury complexity. There’s a lovely texture to it too, with a rounded mid-palate balanced by fresh acidity that keeps everything lifted and moreish. It’s the kind of wine that unfolds as you drink it, revealing more detail with each sip.

It’s also been a huge hit with the team and customers at Reserve Wines – a common reaction on tasting has simply been: “that’s delicious.” With limited stock available, it’s one for those who like discovering something a bit special before everyone else catches on.
