Bright, zesty, and full of character, this old-vine Palomino is anything but ordinary. Fresh almond skin, fennel, and a delicate hint of jasmine lead the way on the nose. It’s a light, fresh, minerally style with just a touch of oily weight and waxy texture that speaks of its dry-grown vineyard origins. A whisper of nuttiness lingers on the finish, making it a wine to savour.
Try this with with simply cooked fish, pan-seared scallops, or crispy fishcakes. Asparagus and lemon risotto brings out the wine’s freshness or an aged Manchego or a nutty Comté enhances its saline, savoury edge.
“This is one of those wines that surprises you – in a good way. You might not expect much from a grape more commonly found in sherry, but this is fresh, textured, and delightfully different. It’s like a seaside breeze in a glass, with a salty kick that keeps you coming back for more. If you love a crisp white but fancy something a bit off the beaten track, this is well worth a go.”
Strange Kompanjie Unlimited (or SKU, if you like a good abbreviation) is all about celebrating the Cape’s quirkier grapes – the ones that don’t usually get their time in the spotlight. This ‘Kultivar Club for the Underdog’ takes a playful approach to winemaking, experimenting with forgotten varieties and championing the unfashionable.
This old-vine Palomino comes from a tiny parcel of vines planted back in 1977, high up on the Piekenierskloof plateau. The vines are gnarled, stumpy, and look like they’ve been through a battle, but their struggle is what makes the wine so special. Their deep roots tap into the dry, rocky soil, producing small but intensely flavoured grapes.
Sustainability is at the heart of Strange Kompanjie’s approach. They’re part of South Africa’s Integrated Production of Wine (IPW) system, ensuring eco-friendly practices from vineyard to bottle. It’s all about making wine that respects the land and lets the character of the grape shine through.
