Get to know: Rayos i Truenos, L'enfant Verdejo
Tasting Note
This is a wonderfully vibrant example of Spain's Verdejo grape. It has all the vivid fruit you want with some lime and pear notes joining floral blossom and melon fruit aromas. These follow on to the palate with the lime in focus and there's some good weight to the body due to 9 months aging in contact with the lees (spent yeast). There's refreshing energetic acidity keeping it well balanced. The finish has intensity and concentration that lingers nicely.
This is a great wine to try with a few tapas plates like chilli and garlic prawns and grilled pork skewers.
Kate Says
"This is a great project from Rueda that showcases why we love Verdejo from this region so much. It is such an easy wine to enjoy. Lots of ripe and juicy fruit, just like you'd find in a good Sauvignon Blanc. I'd have this with a seafood paella."
Producer Info
The name of this wine translates at Lightning and Thunder and is a new organic project from winemaker José Antonio Fernández & Vinos Selectos. Their aim is to present Verdejo and Rueda wine in a sincere way that showcases how exciting and intense this grape can be. Their first vintage was in 2019 using fruit grown on their own family owned vineyards located in La Seca. Their low bush vines range from 35 to 50 years old and are in organic conversion. Fruit is picked by hand during the cooler nights to maintain the freshness of the grapes.
