Quinta do Piloto, Moscatel de Setubal 2021

Get to know: Quinta do Piloto Moscatel Setúbal

A beautifully expressive Portuguese fortified wine from the sun-drenched Setúbal Peninsula

Tasting Note

Quinta do Piloto Moscatel Setúbal 2021 is a young, vibrant expression of this traditional sweet wine, made entirely from Moscatel de Setúbal grapes. Like marmalade in colour with glimmers of amber, it offers a heady bouquet of citrus peel, quince marmalade, and dried fruits, underpinned by delicate notes of aged brandy. The palate is rich and full-bodied, bursting with flavours of sweet orange, caramel, and spice, perfectly balanced by the grape’s natural acidity. The finish is long and smooth, leaving a lingering impression of citrus and toffee. A superb example of fortified Moscatel from Setúbal that’s both indulgent and refreshingly lively.

Top food pairings:

  • Orange and almond cake
  • Crème brûlée with caramelised sugar
  • Blue cheese with honey or quince jelly
Kate Says

"I love how this Moscatel manages to feel both indulgent and refreshing. It’s got that luscious sweetness you’d expect, but the citrus edge keeps it bright and balanced. Think of it as dessert and digestif all in one – the perfect way to end an evening."

Producer Info

Quinta do Piloto is a historic, family-run estate in Palmela on the Setúbal Peninsula, founded by Humberto Cardoso in the early 20th century. Now run by the fourth generation, the family continues to champion the region’s heritage of Moscatel de Setúbal wines. Their vineyards span both clay-limestone slopes in the Serra da Arrábida and sandy soils in Poceirão, producing fruit of exceptional depth and character. Winemaking combines ancient local traditions with a sustainable, minimal-intervention approach to highlight the purity of the grape and terroir.

How it’s made:

  • Variety: 100% Moscatel de Setúbal (Muscat of Alexandria)
  • Grapes sourced from vineyards in Serra da Arrábida and Poceirão
  • Fermented and aged for two years in Argelian concrete ânforae
  • No oak used – preserving the variety’s natural fruit and freshness
  • Sustainably produced, reflecting the estate’s respect for tradition and the environment

Good to know:

  • Region: Setúbal Peninsula, Portugal
  • Style: Fortified sweet wine
  • Closure: Cork
  • Vegan: Not specified
  • ABV: 17%
  • Vintage: 2021

Why we love it:

This Setúbal Moscatel combines the rich, honeyed sweetness of classic Portuguese dessert wines with a surprisingly fresh, fruit-driven edge thanks to its unique ageing in concrete ânfora. It’s a deliciously versatile wine – perfect with puddings, cheese, or simply savoured on its own as a sweet treat.
