Quinta da Raza, Avesso Alvarino 2022

Quinta da Raza, Avesso Alvarinho, Vinho Verde DOC, Portugal

A fresh and floral white from northern Portugal with real depth and character. Bright, zesty, and full of charm.

Tasting Note

This is a top-notch Portuguese white wine from the Vinho Verde DOC, blending Avesso and Alvarinho – two of the region’s most prized grapes. It’s light on its feet but far from simple. Expect citrus blossom, ripe peach and a gentle herbal lift on the nose, followed by crisp acidity, soft texture and a long, dry finish with just a whisper of spice.

It’s got that classic Vinho Verde freshness, but with more richness and structure than your average bottle. A wine that balances brightness with a touch of creaminess – seriously good stuff.

Top food pairings:

  • Herby chickpea salad with lemon dressing (vegan)
  • Pan-fried seabass with crushed new potatoes
  • Cheese: young goat’s cheese or a wedge of brie

Brilliant with food, or just chilled and sipped in the garden. A clever white that punches well above its weight.

Kate Says

“This is the sort of wine I always want in the fridge. It’s crisp and elegant, but not shouty. That bit of lees ageing adds texture and makes it so moreish. You could pair it with all sorts – or just enjoy it on its own with your feet up.”

Producer Info

Quinta da Raza is tucked away in the Basto sub-region of Vinho Verde DOC, where vineyards benefit from a unique microclimate shaped by the Marão mountains and the Tâmega River. It’s been in the Teixeira Coelho family for generations, with Diogo Teixeira Coelho leading a quality-focused revival since the 1980s.

How it’s made:

  • A blend of Avesso (around 60%) and Alvarinho from granite and schist soils
  • Grapes are hand-harvested at peak ripeness
  • Fermented in stainless steel to preserve fruit and freshness
  • Around 10% of the previous vintage is aged in French oak for added texture
  • The final blend is aged on fine lees for up to 18 months before bottling

The result? A Vinho Verde white wine with both elegance and depth – floral, citrusy, textural and dry, with a lovely persistent finish.

Good to know:

  • Region: Vinho Verde DOC, Portugal
  • Grapes: Avesso, Alvarinho
  • Vintage: 2022
  • ABV: 13.5%
  • Vegan: Yes
  • Style: Crisp, textural white with good body

Why we love it:

This is not your average spritzy Vinho Verde. It’s layered, grown-up and packed with flavour. Whether you're pairing it with grilled fish, a veggie feast or soft cheese, it’s a refreshing, food-friendly white that shows how exciting Portuguese wine can be.
