Get to know: Mottura Primitivo del Salento
Tasting Note
This Italian Primitivo wine from Apulia is packed with ripe red cherry, juicy blueberry and warming hints of vanilla, dried herbs and spiced wood. A deep ruby-red colour with purple edges gives you a clue to its richness. On the palate, it’s full-bodied, velvety and full of character – persistent and smooth, with well-balanced tannins.
Perfect with:
-
Grilled lamb chops or venison sausages
-
Smoky aubergine and lentil stew
-
Aged cheddar or Pecorino cheese
Serve at 16–18°C.
Kate Says
"Big flavours, smooth texture and proper depth – this is a lovely winter warmer or a BBQ red with backbone. Great value for anyone who loves rich, full-bodied Italian red wine that’s easy to enjoy but has plenty going on."
Producer Info
Mottura is one of the leading wineries in Salento, founded back in 1927 and still family-run. Their vineyards near Taranto use bush-trained Primitivo vines, which produce intensely flavoured grapes.
The 2024 vintage was harvested by machine, with 10–12 days’ skin contact for depth of colour and flavour. Traditional maceration and gentle fermentation techniques like delestage and pumping over help soften tannins while keeping all that bold Primitivo character.
With awards including 90 points from the Ultimate Wine Appraisal for previous vintages, this is a great-value example of what the region does best. A fantastic addition to our southern Italian lineup and one of the best Italian red wines under £15.
