Marco Abella, Loidana Priorat 2021/22

Get to know: Marco Abella Loidana Priorat 2022

An expressive Spanish red wine from the dramatic slate slopes of Priorat.

Tasting Note

Marco Abella Loidana Priorat 2022 is an elegant yet characterful red that offers a brilliant introduction to this iconic region. Deep ruby in colour with lifted aromas of ripe red and black fruits, wild herbs, floral notes, cedar and gentle spice. On the palate, this Priorat red wine is smooth and velvety, with juicy Grenache fruit balanced by the structure of Carignan and a subtle savoury edge from Cabernet Sauvignon. Fresh acidity and fine, abundant tannins carry through to a vibrant, harmonious finish. A beautifully balanced Spanish red that delivers depth without heaviness.

Top food pairings:

  • Roast chicken with rosemary and garlic
  • Lamb cutlets or grilled pork with Mediterranean herbs
  • Mushroom pasta or vegetable dishes with earthy flavours
Kate Says

This is my go-to recommendation when someone wants to dip their toe into Priorat. It’s powerful but elegant, fresh and very moreish. A beautiful food wine. I'd enjoy it with herby lamb cutlets.

Producer Info

Marco Abella is a family-owned winery based in the village of Porrera, at the heart of Priorat. With seven estate vineyards spread across high-altitude peaks, the team focuses on expressing the pure typicity of Priorat through indigenous varieties grown on ancient llicorella slate soils. Careful vineyard work, respect for the environment and thoughtful, gravity-led winemaking give their wines freshness, finesse and a strong sense of place.

How it’s made:

  • Varieties: Carignan, Grenache and Cabernet Sauvignon
  • Grapes harvested from seven estate vineyards at 500–750m altitude to retain freshness
  • Plots fermented separately according to variety, soil and exposure
  • Fermentation in concrete tanks to preserve fruit purity and vibrancy
  • Aged for 8 months in French oak barrels for balance and subtle complexity

Good to know:

  • Region: Priorat, Spain
  • Style: Red, dry, medium- to full-bodied
  • Closure: Cork
  • Vegan: Yes
  • ABV: 14.5%

Why we love it:

This Priorat red wine captures the essence of the region – slatey minerality, vibrant fruit and natural freshness – in a style that’s approachable and versatile. A superb Spanish red for the table, whether you’re discovering Priorat for the first time or coming back for another glass.
