Tasting Note

Kaiken Malbec Clásico 2022 is a textbook Mendoza Malbec - bursting with ripe blackberries, juicy plums, and a lick of dark chocolate and spice from a gentle touch of oak. It’s smooth, full-bodied, and velvety, with soft tannins that make it dangerously easy to drink. There’s a little coffee and mocha in there too, adding richness without ever getting heavy. Think silky fruit, a savoury edge, and a fresh finish that keeps you coming back for more.

Perfect food pairings:

  • Mushroom bourguignon (rich, earthy, and spot on with Malbec’s plush fruit)
  • Mature cheddar or smoked vegan cheese
  • Sunday roast beef with all the trimmings

It’s a proper crowd-pleaser - bold enough for a steak, but balanced enough to work with veggie dishes, too. Great for when you want a smooth, full-bodied red wine from Argentina that ticks all the boxes.

Kate Says

"Kaiken Malbec is a staple in our range, it always stands out in blind tastings because it's smooth and velvety and just a really pleasing style of wine. Malbec is still super popular and it's down to wines like this."

Producer Info

Kaiken is a winery that bridges the Andes - founded by legendary Chilean winemaker Aurelio Montes after he fell in love with Mendoza’s vineyards. The name comes from the kaiken, a wild goose that flies between Chile and Argentina, and that cross-border spirit runs through everything they do.

The grapes for the Kaiken Malbec Clásico come mainly from Agrelo in Luján de Cuyo, Mendoza - high-altitude vineyards around 950 metres up, where warm days and cool nights help the fruit ripen fully while keeping its freshness. The soils are a mix of sand, clay and stones from ancient Andean erosion, which adds depth and softness to the wine.

Grapes are hand-picked and cold-soaked for up to a week to boost colour and aroma. After fermentation in small tanks (to keep things precise), the wine macerates for around 20 days, then 50% goes into French oak barrels for eight months. The rest stays in stainless steel to keep that pure fruit flavour. It’s lightly filtered and vegan-friendly, with sustainability at its heart - Kaiken are B-Corp certified and were named New World Producer of the Year in 2024 by the Sommelier Wine Awards.
