Hans Herzog Tempranillo 2019

Get to know: Hans Herzog Tempranillo

Tasting Note

A rare New Zealand Tempranillo, this organic, small-batch wine is a bold yet elegant expression of the grape. Expect aromas of dark cherries, violets, and sweet spice, leading to a silky-textured palate layered with dark berries, chocolate, rose petals, and subtle earthiness. The structure is refined yet powerful, with refreshing acidity and a long, luxurious finish.

Try this with slow-cooked lamb, chargrilled steak, or aged Manchego

Kate Says

"A serious and complex take on Tempranillo—think Rioja Reserva meets Marlborough finesse. Full-bodied yet vibrant, this is one to savour."

Producer Info

Established in 1994 by Swiss expats Hans and Therese Herzog this is an artisan family winery acclaimed for growing handcrafted wines from their exceptional 'Grand Cru' organic vineyard in Marlborough. All the Hans Herzog grapes are 100% grown on their organic vineyard at one of Marlborough's best sites, handpicked, produced and bottled on the estate.

Hans Herzog’s non-interventional winemaking philosophy shines through in this wine. Hand-harvested from low-yielding organic vines, the grapes undergo wild fermentation before spending 36 months in French oak barriques, achieving a Reserva-level depth and richness. With just 1,573 bottles produced, this is a rare and sought-after vintage.
