Fonseca Unfiltered LBV Port 2018

Get to know: Fonseca Unfiltered LBV Port 2018

Tasting Note

The nose is rich, full of blackberries, wild plums, and a touch of liquorice, with a lovely hint of tension. There’s a soft, plump layer of raspberry and redcurrant with a bit of floral sweetness. On the palate, you’ll get spice, brambles, and a touch of Assam tea, along with dark chocolate and a hint of herbs. It’s got loads of dark fruit, silky tannins, and a bright, fresh finish that goes on forever with grippy tannins. A powerful and full-flavoured Late Bottled Vintage that’s bursting with character.

It's best to decant and filter this for an hour at least before serving and try it with fully flavoured cheeses, especially blue cheeses such as Stilton or Roquefort. It is also delicious with desserts made with chocolate or berry fruits.

Kate Says

LBV port has a lot of the depth and richness of a vintage port but without the need for years of ageing. Packed with bold dark fruits and spice, it’s ready to drink now – I love oy with a slice of hazelnut chocolate tart. Full-flavoured, smooth, and a classic drink of the festive season.

Producer Info

Founded in 1815, Fonseca is considered one of the leading Port Houses, famed for its Vintage Ports. Fonseca’s three Quintas are at the heart of the House’s idiosyncratic style of Port. The vineyards are located on soils of schist that has useful water retention which helps combat the effects of the hot, dry summer temperatures. The two Pinhão Valley estates of Quinta do Cruzeiro and Quinta de Santo António, have supplied Fonseca for over a hundred years. Quinta do Panascal in the Távora Valley has a more recent association with Fonseca, but its wines perfectly complement those of the two Pinhão Valley properties. Quinta do Panascal was one of the first properties to have organically certified vineyards as early as 1992, whilst Quinta de Santo António is a prize-winning model of sustainable viticulture producing both grapes and olive oil.

LBV was developed as an alternative to Vintage Port for more relaxed and informal occasions. Like Vintage, LBV is a very high quality Port from a single year. However, unlike Vintage Port, which is bottled after only two years in wood, LBV is bottled after four to six years and is ready to drink when bottled. The wines used to produce Fonseca LBV were drawn from a reserve of some of the best full-bodied red Ports produced at the 2014 harvest, from grapes grown on Fonseca’s own vineyards and on other top properties in the Cima Corgo and Douro Superior areas of the Douro.
LBV Unfiltered is aged in large wooden vats and then drawn off into bottle with no fining or filtration. The result is a naturally expressive wine which has sacrificed none of its depth and fullness of flavour. A limited quantity of this outstanding blend was produced.
