Fonseca Tawny Port in Wooden Box (50cl)

Get to know: Fonseca Tawny Port in Wooden Box (50cl)

Tasting Note

Fonseca's tawny wine has the very inviting tawny-red colour that the style takes its name from. It's an authentic example of this rich and mellow style of port wine. The nose is packed with tempting aromas of apricot and plum, with smooth hints of butterscotch and spice. On the palate, it’s rich and jammy, but that lovely crisp acidity on the finish keeps it nicely balanced.

Try this with almonds, berry fruit or dark chocolate. We love it with a tarte tatin.

Kate Says

Introducing people to the delights of Tawny port is joy that never gets old. At every tasting there is someone who hasn't tried it before and discovers a new favourite. Rich, smooth, and full of dried fruit flavours with a bit of spice. Perfect for those chilly evenings or as a post-dinner treat.

Producer Info

Founded in 1815, Fonseca is considered one of the leading Port Houses, famed for its Vintage Ports. Fonseca’s three Quintas are at the heart of the House’s idiosyncratic style of Port. The vineyards are located on soils of schist that has useful water retention which helps combat the effects of the hot, dry summer temperatures. The two Pinhão Valley estates of Quinta do Cruzeiro and Quinta de Santo António, have supplied Fonseca for over a hundred years. Quinta do Panascal in the Távora Valley has a more recent association with Fonseca, but its wines perfectly complement those of the two Pinhão Valley properties. Quinta do Panascal was one of the first properties to have organically certified vineyards as early as 1992, whilst Quinta de Santo António is a prize-winning model of sustainable viticulture producing both grapes and olive oil.

Fonseca Tawny spends three years ageing in small wooden casks, generally holding about 630 litres. As it matures in cask, Tawny Port gradually loses the deep red 'ruby' colour of youth and takes on the seductive amber hue known as 'tawny'. At the same time the wine becomes progressively smoother and mellower, its aromas gaining in richness and complexity.

After the three years of ageing the wines are then blended together a few months before bottling for balance and harmony. Fonseca tawnies are bottled for immediate drinking.
