Get to know: Domaine Eric Forest, Bourgogne Blanc
Tasting Note
One our favourites from last years En Primeur offering continues to impress with his Bourgogne wine. Made from Chardonnay, the Bourgogne Blanc comes from a small 0.20-hectare vineyard in Vergisson, just outside the Pouilly-Fuissé region, with vines planted in 2017. The unique terroir starts with rich blue marl soils at the bottom and shifts to decomposed granite at as the ground rises. Thanks to the cooler exposure and younger vines, the wine can be a bit lighter in body and structure. To balance this out, Forest blends it with some fuller, more rounded Pouilly-Fuissé press wines, adding richness and a touch of softness. It’s fermented half in barrels for depth and half in vats to keep it fresh and lively.
Kate Says
As Burgundy prices continue to rise, good Bourgogne Blanc wines offer some of the freshness and elegance of Burgundian Chardonnay for a more approachable price. Eric Forest's 2022 is a lovely example. With its balance of citrus and subtle oak, it’s perfect for a sophisticated lunch with grilled seafood or a creamy risotto. Ideal for a white wine gift too.
Producer Info
Eric is a star vigneron, based in the village of Vergisson, and currently has 4.8 hectares of vines planted between 1930 and 1979. He has inherited a great knowledge of nature and biodynamics from his grandfather and this has been a major influence in his approach to viticulture and winemaking. All grapes are hand picked and fermented and matured for ten to fifteen months in barriques and demi-muids. The wines are hand bottled and are, usually, unfiltered.
