Get to know: Charles Frey Riesling Granite

Tasting Note

Bright, fresh, and full of life, this biodynamic Riesling from Alsace is a proper showcase of its granite-rich terroir. Expect a zippy burst of citrus—grapefruit, lime, and lemon zest - balanced by delicate floral notes of honeysuckle and elderflower. A touch of ripe white peach rounds things out before the finish kicks in: saline, mineral, and seriously refreshing. With crisp acidity and a pure, elegant structure, it’s the kind of wine that keeps you coming back for more.

Try this with grilled seabass and fennel salad, spiced cauliflower steaks with a lemony tahini dressing or goat’s cheese.

Kate Says

"This is dry Riesling at its best - zippy, pure, and packed with energy. It’s got that lovely Alsace minerality and is an absolute dream with food. I’d enjoy this on a warm spring evening, with a plate of grilled prawns and lemony aioli."

Producer Info

Maison Charles Frey is a pioneer of organic and biodynamic winemaking in Alsace, crafting wines that truly reflect their terroir. Their Pinot Noir Harmonie is a pure, minimal-intervention expression of the grape, highlighting finesse over power.

The winery owns 14 hectares of vines across five distinct terroirs, all of which are managed using biodynamic principles. This approach to vineyard management focuses on creating a self-sustaining ecosystem that enhances soil health and biodiversity.

Their Riesling Granite comes from vineyards rooted in pure granite soils, which give the wine its trademark mineral streak and finesse. The grapes are hand-harvested before undergoing natural fermentation with wild yeasts, keeping things as pure and expressive as possible. The wine is then aged on fine lees to build texture and complexity, before being bottled with no fining, minimal filtration, and no unnecessary interference.
