Tasting Note

Under the alternative label Vega Badenes, with the same juice inside. This Spanish red blend is all about smooth, easy-drinking fruit – think ripe plum, cherry, and juicy blackberry, with just a whisper of spice to keep things interesting. Medium-bodied and velvety, the Cal Y Canto 2023 is soft on the palate but full of flavour, with subtle notes of vanilla, violet, and cedar in the background.

It's a real crowd-pleaser – whether you're pairing it with food or just enjoying a glass on the sofa.

Top food pairings:

  • Vegan: Chargrilled aubergine and lentil stew – the wine's fruitiness brings out the depth in the veg.

  • Cheese: Manchego or mild cheddar – Spanish wine meets Spanish cheese? Spot on.

  • Meaty: Spiced lamb koftas or pork shoulder – the Syrah adds a gentle kick of peppery spice that works beautifully.

Kate Says

"Sometimes you need a wine that just tastes good and you don't need to think about. This is that kind of wine and also an example of the value you can get from Spanish regions like La Mancha. It has great fruit and would be perfect for barbecue."

Producer Info

Bodegas Isidro Milagro is a family-run winery with three generations of winemaking know-how behind them. While they're based in Rioja, their Cal Y Canto wines are crafted from fruit grown in Castilla-La Mancha – one of Spain’s most exciting wine-growing regions.

The vineyards sit high on the plateau, between 300 and 750 metres above sea level. That means hot sunny days for full ripeness, but cooler nights to lock in freshness – a perfect recipe for juicy, vibrant wines with smooth tannins and balance.

Each grape – Tempranillo, Merlot and Syrah – is picked at peak ripeness and fermented separately in stainless steel tanks. The winemakers use regular pump-overs to extract colour and flavour, but keep things cool and controlled to preserve all that fresh fruit character. After blending the best batches, the wine is matured briefly in tank, not oak – keeping it bright, pure, and all about the fruit.
