Fattoria di Calappiano, Chianti Riserva 2019

Get to know: Calappiano, Chianti Riserva

A classic Tuscan red with real depth and charm.

Tasting Note

This is everything you want from a well-aged Chianti: bright red cherry, wild herbs and sweet spice on the nose, leading into a palate of plum, dried cranberry, and warm oak spice. There’s a rustic elegance here – the tannins are smooth but still structured, with notes of leather and dried thyme on the finish. Balanced, savoury and ready to impress.

Top food pairings:

  • Roasted aubergine parmigiana
  • Wild boar ragu or Tuscan sausage pasta
  • Cheese: Pecorino Toscano or mature cheddar
Kate Says

"The Calappiano winery dates back to the 1500s so they’ve got loads of experience making great wine. It shows in this Riserva Chianti which will satisfy those who want a classic style. A good dinner party wine."

Producer Info

Fattoria di Calappiano is one of the oldest estates in Tuscany, founded in the 1500s by the Medicis and nestled in the hills near Vinci – the birthplace of Leonardo himself. Today, it blends tradition with sustainable farming to produce classic Tuscan wines with integrity.

The Chianti Riserva 2019 is made primarily from Sangiovese, hand-harvested from hillside vineyards. After fermentation, the wine is aged in oak barrels for at least 12 months, followed by extended bottle ageing for smoothness and complexity. This extra time brings out the wine’s depth, elegance and savoury character – perfect for pairing with rich Italian dishes.

How it’s made:

  • Made from hand-harvested Sangiovese grapes
  • Fermented traditionally to preserve varietal character
  • Aged in oak barrels for 12+ months
  • Extended bottle ageing before release
  • Crafted sustainably by one of Tuscany’s oldest estates

Good to know:

  • Region: Chianti, Tuscany, Italy
  • Vintage: 2019
  • Grape: Sangiovese (majority)
  • ABV: 13%
  • Style: Medium-bodied, savoury red

Why we love it:

This Chianti Riserva is a proper old-school Italian red – full of savoury charm and balanced by juicy fruit and gentle spice. It’s made to be enjoyed with food, family and a few stories over dinner.
