Get to know: Bodegas Palacio, Glorioso Gran Reserva

Tasting Note

This red wine is a fantastic example of the classic Rioja style. It’s rich and refined, bursting with blueberry and wild red berry flavors. 26 months in aging in French oak have also given it hints of pipe tobacco, menthol, and cedar, all rounded out with a distinctive mineral finish that adds real character. Medium-bodied and beautifully balanced on the palate with smooth, polished tannins and a long, lingering finish. Made from carefully selected grapes from old vines in the highest parts of Rioja Alavesa, near the Sierra Cantabria Mountains, it’s crafted using carbon neutral, 100% renewable energy.

This is a great match for hearty meals like game, roast meats, or a board of mature cheeses.

Kate Says

"Gran Reserva Rioja is all about depth and elegance, with layers of complex flavors from extended aging. Glorioso Gran Reserva is a well crafted example—perfect for a special dinner with roast lamb or mature cheeses. Ideal for celebrations and it makes a great gift too."

Producer Info

Glorioso is a historic range from the Entrecanales family started in 1917. Today it sits alongside the Cosme Palacio wines as part of this small to medium sized estate in Rioja Alavesa.

The winery have been on a course of serious investment in sustainability: solar powered winery, capture and reuse of rainwater, minimal sprays (only when needed, and Rioja is not an easy place to avoid disease and rot etc), investing in their communities and their workforce.

The wines are showing seriously well against similarly priced Riojas, superbly crafted by Almudena Alberca MW, first female Spanish MW, director of winemaking.

Selected grapes from old vines grown in the highest areas of the Rioja Alavesa, near to the Sierra Cantabria Mountains. Traditional production methods including gentle winemaking processes to maximise fruit expression. Temperature-controlled fermentation. Ageing: 26 months in French oak barrels. The wine remains in the bottle for at least 36 months.
