Mauricio Lorca, Calma Indomita Albarin 2023

Get to know: Mauricio Lorca, Calma Indomita Albarin

Tasting Note

Fresh, zesty and just a little bit wild, this Spanish white from Mauricio Lorca is a real find. Made from the rare native grape Albarín (not to be confused with Albariño), it bursts with citrus and stone fruit—think mandarin peel, lime zest, ripe peach and a splash of pineapple. But what really lifts it is the cool climate zip—high-altitude vineyards give this wine a mineral edge and an elegant, mouthwatering freshness.

Dry, aromatic and beautifully textured, it’s a top pick for adventurous white wine drinkers, especially those who love Sauvignon but want something new. A Spanish white wine with a difference, and a seriously classy summer sipper.

Try this with grilled squid with lemon and chilli, tomato and goat’s cheese tart or summer ceviche.

Kate Says

"Albarin is an authentic, indigenous grape variety grown along the camino del Santiago, especially around Leon. Grown at 1,000m high altitude. It has a lovely floral and tropical aromas balanced by zippy minerality. It's the perfect wine for the curious."

Producer Info

Winemaker Mauricio Lorca is well known in Argentina, but his Spanish adventure is turning just as many heads. A former medic-in-the-making turned wine obsessive, he’s made a name for himself crafting oak-free, terroir-driven wines that are all about purity and place.

His Calma Indómita project in Castilla y León is about rediscovering local grapes and letting them shine - without overworking them. The vineyards sit at around 950–1,000m altitude, which keeps things cool and the wines naturally vibrant. Albarín is a grape native to the Camino del Santiago region and it thrives in these stony soils.

The wine is made with modern tech and a light touch - minimal handling, maximum freshness. While it’s not certified organic, Lorca’s commitment to sustainability and vegan-friendly methods runs right through his winemaking, both in Spain and back in Mendoza.
