Lyrarakis 1905 Vilana 2022

Get to know: Lyrarakis Vilana “1905” 2022

A beautifully expressive Greek orange wine from the hills of Crete, made from the island’s signature grape, Vilana.

Tasting Note

Lyrarakis Vilana “1905” is a unique Cretan skin-contact white wine that shows how much depth this native grape can offer. Pale gold in colour with gentle amber hints from six days of skin contact, it bursts with aromas of ripe peach, apricot and sweet spice. On the palate, it’s fresh and textured, combining bright stone fruit flavours with a touch of wild herbs and subtle oak. The acidity is crisp and balanced by fine, chalky tannins, leading to a long, clean finish with lovely tension and freshness. A wine with real personality – pure, expressive and beautifully made.

Top food pairings:

  • Grilled sea bream with lemon and herbs
  • Chicken souvlaki with tzatziki
  • Roasted vegetables with feta and olive oil
Kate Says

Producer Info

Lyrarakis Wines is a family-run estate founded in 1966 by brothers Manolis and Sotiris Lyrarakis on the island of Crete. Today, the second generation continues their mission to revive rare native varieties and craft wines that celebrate Crete’s unique terroir. Based in the mountainous heart of the island, the family works with more than 11 indigenous grapes – including several they’ve helped save from extinction. Their approach is rooted in sustainability and regenerative farming, with organic practices, homemade compost, and careful stewardship of soil and water. Widely regarded as one of Crete’s benchmark producers, Lyrarakis combines traditional knowledge with a forward-thinking mindset.

How it’s made:

  • Variety: 100% Vilana
  • Grapes hand-harvested from small, high-altitude parcels on Crete
  • Six days of skin contact for added texture and aromatic depth
  • Wild fermentation with native yeasts
  • Matured for nine months in oak barrels for complexity and structure
  • Tiny production of just 1,500 bottles
