Napa Valley Cabernet at its most compelling.
Pour a glass and you'll find yourself drawn in by those gorgeous, generous aromas: ripe black cherry, dark plum straight from the tree, and a whisper of cassis that speaks to the wine's depth. There's something almost floral here too - a touch of lavender - alongside savoury herbal notes that add intrigue and complexity. This isn't a simple, fruit-forward Cabernet; it's layered and thoughtful.
On the palate, it's beautifully balanced. Yes, there's richness - this is Napa, after all - but it never feels heavy or overwrought. The tannins are present but wonderfully polished, providing structure without astringency. Winemaker Elias Fernandez has crafted something that drinks beautifully now yet has the backbone to cellar for a couple of decades if you have the patience (we're not sure we would).
This wine wants bold flavours to match its generosity. Think herb-crusted rack of lamb with a redcurrant jus, a properly aged ribeye with peppercorn sauce, or slow-braised beef short ribs with root vegetables. For something less meaty, try it alongside a rich mushroom and thyme tart with aged Gruyère.
"Shafer represents everything we love about quality-driven winemaking: family commitment, exceptional vineyards, and a house style that prioritises balance alongside power. The 2021 vintage is a stunning expression of Stags Leap District Cabernet Sauvignon. If you've been looking for a Napa Cabernet that genuinely delivers on its 'wow-factor' promise, this is the one.."
The name 'One Point Five' tells a lovely story: it refers to the 1.5 generations of the Shafer family who've tended these Stags Leap District vineyards since 1972. Doug Shafer took over from his father John, and together they built something remarkable - a winery that consistently produces wines of real character without ever losing sight of what makes wine genuinely enjoyable to drink.
There are wines that impress you, and then there are wines that genuinely move you. This Cabernet Sauvignon from Shafer Vineyards falls firmly into the second camp - a bottle that reminds you exactly why Napa Valley earned its reputation as one of the world's great wine regions.
