Bodegas Palacio, Cosme Palacio Vino de Laguardia Crianza 2019

Get to know: Bodegas Palacio, Cosme Palacio Vino de Laguardia Crianza

Tasting Note

Made from vines older than 40 years of age grown at an altitude over over 600m the wine is matured for 12 months in lightly toasted French barrels. It’s deep red with purple highlights, with a very intense nose of ripe red fruit, liquorice and aniseed. Ageing in new French oak brings touches of spices such as pepper, cinnamon and menthol. It is a powerful wine, with fine, ripe tannins, sweet flavours on the finish and balanced acidity bringing freshness. The finish is very long, ending on flavours of candied fruit and roasted coffee beans.

Try this with lamb sausage and butter bean cassoulet.

In the Press

"...some believe Rioja’s future will inevitably be focused on its higher-priced, higher-quality wines, such as Cosme Palacio’s gloriously complex Laguardia Crianza."

David Williams - The Guardian, 25 February 2024

Kate Says

"This is classic Rioja, done very well. A wine that delivers intensity and concentration of fruit with a delicate touch and freshness that comes from using grapes grown at altitude. A wine you'll remember long after the last sip. This would make a great red wine gift."

Producer Info

Founded by entrepreneur and visionary, Don Cosme Palacio in 1894 in the heart of the Rioja Alavesa, Bodegas Palacio owns one of Rioja's very few “Singular Vineyards”, where 100-year-old vines grow. Bodegas Palacio since its creation, has contributed to the revolution of La Rioja wines, also forming part of the limited and select group of Bodegas Históricas of the D.O Ca Rioja.

Cosme Palacio Vino de Laguardia is born from a selection of the best vineyards located in this area of Rioja Alavesa, at the foot of the Sierra de Cantabria, located at altitude, where Tempranillo grows optimally.

Aged for 12 months in new cleft French oak barrels of 225 liters of soft toasting and better French cooperages. The wine remains a minimum of 12 months in bottle.

The winery have been on a course of serious investment in sustainability: solar powered winery, capture and reuse of rainwater, minimal sprays (only when needed, and Rioja is not an easy place to avoid disease and rot etc), investing in their communities and their workforce.
