Domaine Gayda, Flying Solo Red 2023

Get to know: Domaine Gayda, Flying Solo Red

A bold, fruit-driven red that tips its hat to the daring postal pilots of the 1920s.

Tasting Note

Made from Grenache and Syrah grown on limestone plateaus in the Minervois, this is a wine that proudly champions local grape varieties over international trends. Deep violet in the glass with aromas of red plum, blackberry and blackcurrant jam. A splash of redcurrant and a hint of liquorice add freshness and spice. The palate is bursting with juicy red fruits, with mellow yet structured tannins and a savoury finish of pink pepper and liquorice.

Top food pairings:

  • Chargrilled lamb or smoky BBQ ribs
  • Aubergine parmigiana or roasted red peppers
  • Pizza night with spicy nduja or pepperoni
Kate Says

"This red is vibrant and juicy, with ripe berry flavors and a hint of spice, making it super easy to enjoy. Perfect for casual dinners or a BBQ, it pairs brilliantly with grilled meats or a hearty pasta dish. Great value, too!"

Producer Info

Domaine Gayda, nestled in Brugairolles near Carcassonne, is distinguished by a rich history and a philosophy focused on integrity and quality. Founded in 1749 as a coaching inn the farm buildings were gradually transformed into luxury accommodation, marking the beginning of a remarkable transformation. In 2004, under the enlightened leadership of owners Tim Ford and Anthony Record, in partnership with talented winemaker Vincent Chansault, the estate took a new turn by modernizing significantly.

Known for its organic practices and flair for producing high-quality wines with personality. The ‘Flying Solo’ range celebrates the bravery of the pioneering Aéropostale pilots, and the wine is just as adventurous – expressive, approachable and proud of its regional roots. The grapes for this wine are planted on Limestone plateaus in Minervois. Ageing is done on fine lees. The wine then blended and underwent sterile filtration prior to bottling.

How it’s made:

  • Grenache undergoes traditional vinification to preserve structure and depth
  • Syrah is macerated briefly at low temperature to enhance fruit purity
  • Wines are aged on fine lees to develop texture and roundness
  • Blended and sterile filtered before bottling for clarity and freshness

Good to know:

  • Region: Pays d’Oc IGP, France
  • Grapes: 60% Grenache, 40% Syrah
  • Vintage: 2024
  • ABV: 14%
  • Style: Juicy, medium-bodied red with spice
  • Vegan: Yes
  • Serve at: 16–18°C

Why we love it:

Great value, full of character, and made by a producer who knows how to let local grapes shine. A brilliant weeknight red that doesn’t need food – but absolutely sings with it.
