Mamete Prevostini, Botonero IGP Alpine Nebbiolo 2023

Get to know: Mamete Prevostini, Botonero IGP Alpine Nebbiolo 2023

Tasting Note

Nebbiolo – but not from where you’d expect. This is Alpine Nebbiolo from Lombardy’s Valtellina valley, where the grapes grow on dramatic, terraced slopes high in the Italian Alps.

Botonero 2023 is wonderfully fragrant and light on its feet, offering up bright cherry, rose petal, redcurrant, and a touch of dried herbs and crushed stone. Tannins are gentle but grippy – think fine tea leaves – with fresh acidity and a long, mineral finish. It’s precise, pure, and quietly sophisticated.

Try this with mushroom risotto or wild mushroom tagliatelle, chargrilled pork or rosemary roast lamb, Taleggio, Fontina, or aged Alpine cheeses or Lentil and roasted veg stew with a splash of balsamic.

This is a wine that shines slightly chilled – 15–16°C is ideal.

Kate Says

"This is Nebbiolo with hiking boots on. Not from the Piedmont but Alpine Italy, on the footsteps of the mountains, north of Lake Como. It's light and fresh but tight and complex, it has all the character of you expect of this grape, it's just fresher on the palate."

Producer Info

Mamete Prevostini is a benchmark producer in Valtellina, a region tucked up against the Swiss border. He’s a champion of mountain Nebbiolo (locally called Chiavennasca), making wines that combine tradition with clarity and finesse.

Botonero is his most approachable cuvée – a no-oak, pure-fruit expression of high-altitude Nebbiolo, grown sustainably on steep, sunny terraces. The 2023 vintage is beautifully balanced, with a little extra ripeness and lots of Alpine charm.
