Dom. de la Madone, Fleurie Vielles Vignes 2023

Get to know: Dom. de la Madone, Fleurie Vieilles Vignes 2023

A beautifully expressive Fleurie red wine from the heart of Beaujolais, grown on the rolling granite hillsides beneath La Chapelle de la Madone.

Tasting Note

Dom. de la Madone Fleurie Vieilles Vignes 2023 is an elegant yet quietly powerful red that shows just how serious old-vine Gamay can be. Bright ruby in colour with lifted aromas of ripe red cherry, wild raspberry, darker berry fruit and a subtle savoury note of cured meat. On the palate, it’s beautifully poised – medium-bodied with pure, concentrated fruit, gentle spice and a lovely sense of drive. Soft, silky tannins and fresh acidity carry the flavours through to a long, moreish finish. This is a Fleurie red wine with real depth, finesse and character.

Top food pairings:

  • Roast chicken or Bresse poultry with creamy sauce
  • Rack of lamb with thyme or rosemary
  • Mushroom dishes or lentil-based vegetarian cooking

This wine is stunning. There is a beautiful drive behind that pure, intense fruit, dark and red berries, a little cured meat savouriness, long finish, soft tannins, medium acidity. Soooo yummy.

Producer Info

Domaine de la Madone is a classic, low-intervention family estate in Fleurie, run by Jean-Marc and Arnaud Després, whose vineyards sit around the historic Chapelle de la Madone, built in the 19th century. Farming is environmentally focused, with high biodiversity in the vineyards and vegetable gardens alongside the vines, reflecting their deep connection to the land. Old granite soils, careful hands-off winemaking and a respect for tradition combine to produce some of the most characterful Fleurie wines in the region.

How it’s made:

  • Varieties: 100% Gamay from 70–100-year-old vines
  • Hand-harvested for optimal ripeness and fruit purity
  • Whole-bunch fermentation with 10–15 days of maceration
  • Traditional fermentation with remontage only, no pigeage
  • Light filtration and a tiny addition of sulphur at bottling

Good to know:

  • Region: Fleurie, Beaujolais, France
  • Style: Red, still, medium-bodied
  • Closure: Cork
  • Vegan: Yes
  • ABV: 13%
  • Vintage: 2023

Why we love it:

This Fleurie red wine captures everything we adore about great Beaujolais – pure Gamay fruit, soft tannins, and a sense of place that really shines through. Elegant yet deeply satisfying, it’s brilliant with food or simply enjoyed on its own when you fancy something quietly special.
