Uva non Grata, Gamay 2023

Get to know: Uva Non Grata Gamay

A vibrant and fruit-packed French red wine made from pure Gamay grapes in the hills just outside Lyon.

Tasting Note

Uva Non Grata Gamay 2023 is a cheeky little red that’s all about juicy, upfront fruit. Bright ruby in colour with aromas of red cherry, raspberry, and a lift of violet. On the palate, it’s light-bodied and crunchy with fresh berry flavours, gentle tannins, and no oak to get in the way. The finish is clean, lively, and ultra-drinkable – a true expression of Gamay at its best. Made in a deliberately rebellious style, this wine champions fruit, freshness, and a modern French attitude.

Top food pairings:

  • Charcuterie or grilled herby sausages
  • Roast beetroot and walnut salad with balsamic glaze
  • Soft cheeses such as Brie, Camembert or goat’s cheese
Kate Says

"A fresh crunchy, fruit forward style of wine. A cute story about this one - apparently Gamay was outlawed by Philip the Bold in 1395, but some rebellious vignerons secretly planted some among the Pinot Noir vines to keep it alive. Thank goodness!"

Producer Info

Uva Non Grata is a wine with a rebellious streak, created in honour of the once-banned Gamay grape. Made by a co-operative of growers just outside Lyon, the wine comes from granite-rich soils that give Gamay its trademark brightness and energy. Minimal intervention in the cellar ensures a pure and juicy style that shows off the best of this much-maligned but now celebrated grape variety.

How it’s made:

  • Variety: 100% Gamay
  • Hand-harvested early to preserve freshness
  • Traditional carbonic maceration for vibrant fruit character
  • Fermented in stainless steel to keep things unoaked and crisp
  • Minimal intervention, vegan-friendly production

Good to know:

  • Region: Vin de France, from vineyards near Lyon
  • Style: Red, still, light-bodied
  • Closure: Screwcap
  • Vegan: Yes
  • ABV: 13.5%
  • Vintage: 2023

Why we love it:

This French Gamay is an irresistible fruit bomb – crunchy, juicy, and endlessly drinkable. Perfect with charcuterie, cheese, or even a Tuesday night pizza, it’s proof that this once “forbidden” grape is now one of France’s most charming and versatile red wine styles.
