Alceno, Sierra de Enmedio Monastrell 2024

Get to know: Alceño Sierra de Enmedio Monastrell

A bold and approachable Spanish red wine from the sun-drenched vineyards of Jumilla in southeast Spain.

Tasting Note

Alceño Sierra de Enmedio Monastrell is a juicy and full-flavoured red that balances ripe fruit with gentle spice. Deep ruby in colour with aromas of blackberry, plum, and a hint of black pepper. On the palate, it’s smooth and medium-bodied, with soft tannins and subtle notes of liquorice on the finish. This Spanish Monastrell is a perfect example of a sun-soaked Spanish red, offering vibrant, easy-drinking appeal without compromising on character.

Top food pairings:

  • Grilled aubergine burgers or vegetable tapas
  • Slow-cooked lamb or smoky BBQ ribs
  • Hard cheeses such as aged Manchego or mature cheddar

In the Press

"Appealingly soft, juicy Spanish red. Easy to drink on its own, better with tapas." - Fiona Beckett, The Guardian October 2023

Kate Says

"Monastrell is the Spanish name for the Mourvèdre grape and it thrives in hot regions like Jumilla. This example from family owned winery Alceno is ripe, fruity & delicious. I'd enjoy this with a few plates of meaty tapas."

Producer Info

Bodegas Alceño is a family-run winery in Jumilla, producing wine since 1870. Their vineyards benefit from hot days and cool nights, perfect for Monastrell vines that flourish in dry, limestone-rich soils. The winery combines traditional know-how with careful vineyard management to craft expressive, fruit-forward wines that reflect the region’s terroir.

How it’s made:

  • Varieties: 100% Monastrell
  • Grapes harvested from older vines in late summer for concentrated flavour
  • Destemmed and fermented using traditional methods at controlled temperatures
  • No oak ageing to retain the vibrant fruit character
  • Soft tannins developed naturally through careful vinification
