Dom. Jean-Paul Balland, Sancerre 2024

Get to know: Domaine Jean-Paul Balland, Sancerre 2024

A bright and refreshing French Sauvignon Blanc from the rolling vineyards of Sancerre in the Loire Valley.

Tasting Note

Domaine Jean-Paul Balland, Sancerre is a crisp Loire white that’s all about freshness and flavour. Pale yellow with a touch of green, it kicks off with zesty aromas of grapefruit and lemon, backed up by hints of herbs. Give it a swirl and you’ll also find notes of peach, pear, and white flowers. On the palate it’s clean, lively, and full of citrus and stone fruit, with that classic Sancerre minerality running through. The finish is long, fresh, and just a little bit spicy – everything you’d want from a top-notch Sancerre white wine.

Top food pairings:

  • Fresh goat’s cheese with crusty bread
  • Simple grilled fish with a squeeze of lemon
  • Spring vegetable risotto
Kate Says

"This Sancerre is like a breath of fresh air – zingy, elegant, and so easy to enjoy. Perfect with a plate of goat’s cheese, or just chilled on a bright afternoon."

Producer Info

Domaine Jean-Paul Balland is a family estate in the village of Bué, now run by sisters Elise and Isabelle. Isabelle makes the wines, while Elise keeps everything running smoothly behind the scenes. They’ve got around 20 hectares of vines, including some prized plots like Le Grand Chemarin and Le Chêne Marchand. Their style is all about letting the Sauvignon Blanc and the local soils shine, helped along by modern cellars and careful winemaking. The result is Sancerre that’s full of character and always spot on in the glass.

How it’s made:

  • Varieties: 100% Sauvignon Blanc
  • Vines planted on classic Sancerre soils – limestone “Caillottes” and clay-limestone “Terres Blanches”
  • Grapes gently pressed in a pneumatic press
  • Fermented with natural yeasts at cool temperatures to keep things fresh
  • Aged on fine lees with gentle stirring for extra depth and texture
