Ridge Vineyards, Geyserville 2016
It's hard to believe that Ridge's iconic field blend Geyserville Zinfandel celebrates its 50th anniversary with the 2015 bottling. Today, the wine is quite deep, powerful and unyielding thanks to the low yields of the vintage. It's not surprising that winemaker Eric Baugher decided to give it a few more months in barrel as there is a lot of stuffing here, and the interplay of fruit, aromatics and acidity is compelling. Sporting a mix of dark fruits that runs from cassis to blackberries and blueberries, along with complex elements of liquorice, cocoa and earthy spice, it has all the richness you could expect. Eminently ageworthy, its youthful structure warrants a wait but the tannins are never unruly and its insistently fruity finish infused with notes of red cherry jam, pomegranate, rose petal and woodsmoke is beguiling. Thirty seven lots of grapes were fermented separately, thirty one of which made it through the rigorous selection process to be included in the final assemblage. It is a wine that will continue to develop over the next twenty years.
