Hanewald-Schwerdt, Spatburgunder Trocken 2017 [E8]
Bright strawberry and cherry notes lead the way with some delicious savoury character and good minerality. Intense and medium bodied this is designed to be drunk easily and could be served with pigeon or duck. After picking we did a cold soaking for one day until fermentation on skins was started by inoculation of the must. 3 pumpovers a day during fermentation. After fermentation the wine got some time to extract tannins out of the skins for 2 more days. After pressing the wine was aged in 6000 liter barrel, a small amount went into 225l barrels for one year. 20 % new french oak barrels were used.
The family owned and operated estate Hanewald-Schwerdt was founded in 1955 in Leistadt. Today Thomas Hanewald & Stephan Schwerdt took over the family buisness which was established by their grandfather. The two cousins focus on Riesling and Pinot Noir. Pinot Blanc is the second most important white variety. The secret of their handcrafted wines is a unique limestone reef which dominates all the sites arround Leistadt. A hidden treasure away off the beaten track. The vines are old and surrounded by a protected natural resort in the shade of the Haardt mountains.
