Sparkling Wines

Sparkling wine

Sparkling wines have long been associated with celebrations, that partly because fizzy wine is simply so much fun to drink! There are a number of styles in our collection so we've put together a quick guide to help you choose the right one for you.

What is Sparkling wine?

Sparkling wine has been refermented to produce naturally created bubbles.

'Traditional method' sparkling wine is refermented in the bottle using the addition of a little extra sweet grape juice is along with yeast. The method creates dry, complex wines that can be matured for months before release.

Sparkling wines that use this method are:

Champagne, Cava, Cremant, English Sparkling wine, Methode Cap Classique (South African Sparkling Wine) among others.

'Charmat Method' Sparkling wine is refermented in a large tank and has less contact with the fermentation yeast resulting in sparkling wines that have clean fresh fruit flavours and less complexity. These are generally not suitable for maturation and are bottled without maturation for immediate consumption.

Sparkling wines that use this method are:

Prosecco, Lambrusco and Asti Spumante, German Sekt

Sparkling Red Wine

There's never been a better time to try fizzy red wine. The quality is high and it is becoming more popular again with notable examples being complex, sophisticated Sparkling Shiraz Australia and the fun and fruity Lambrusco from Italy.

Pétillant Natural (Pét Nat)

Pétillant Natural (Pét Nat) wines are made by pausing the initial fermentation of the wine by chilling it, before bottling and allowing the original fermentation to finish in the bottle. This is a very easy drinking style that is becoming very trendy.
